Acquirer
A network participant that is responsible for the operational control of a terminal which provides transactions for cardholders. |

ATM Transaction
Any of the following functions attempted by a cardholder at a terminal: withdrawal, cash advance, transfer or inquiry. |

Card or AccessCard
A plastic card, or other medium such as a CD issued on behalf of a financial institution which permits electronic access to one or more accounts. |

Card Issuer
A financial institution that issues cards to account holders for use in performing electronic transactions. |

EFT Network
An electronic financial services system such as EBSG® which links financial institutions and their account/cardholders with automated teller machines (ATMs) and merchant point-of-sale (POS) terminals to complete a consumer electronic financial transaction. |

PAN
The Primary Account Number which is embossed, printed and/or encoded on an account holder's card. |

PIN
A cardholder's Personal Identification Number, or secret code, which is selected and used by a cardholder at terminals as a means of identification. |

PIN Debit
A debit transaction at the point of sale that is authorized by entry of the cardholder's PIN on the key pad at the POS terminal. |

POS Transaction
Any of the following functions attempted by a cardholder at a POS terminal: payment, verification, reversal, customer credit, POS balance inquiry or merchant-authorized payment. |

Processor
A data-processing firm, either financial institution-owned or third party, that is an issuer processor, an acquirer processor or both, for handling transactions. |

Signature Debit
A debit transaction at the point of sale that is authorized through the cardholder's signature on the cash register payment slip. Signature debit transactions typically are settled within 48 hours. |

Surcharge or Convenience Fee
A fee imposed to certain cardholders by the ATM owner or POS deployer for transactions initiated at the ATM or POS device. |

Switch
The highly advanced computer hardware and software operated by EBSG® for the purpose of transmitting items and messages through the system. |

Terminal
A device which meets the specifications of EBSG® and at which a transaction may be initiated by a cardholder. There are four categories of terminals: automated teller machines, point-of-sale terminals, terminals at which both ATM and POS transactions may be performed and Virtual terminals. |
